Cuisenaire Rods

Cuisenaire Rods are brilliant for exposing the structure of mathematics, noticing patterns and working efficiently with numbers. They are a great companion to the Spot On With Numbers resources as they provide structural variation. Spot On offers a discrete representation of number (linking to whole numbers) and Cuisenaire Rods provide a continuous representation of numbers (linking to measures).

Appreciating Number Relationships

Once number relationships have been established with the Spot On Pegs and Boards, this knowledge can be applied to the Cuisenaire Rods. For example, 3 + 3 = 6 can be secured on the Pegs and Boards (shown at the top of the picture) and then used to compare the values of the Cuisenaire Rods (shown at the bottom of the picture).

Multiplication

Multiples of 6 on the 100 square template using Cuisenaire Rods.

Once the part whole relationship has been established with Spot On, this can be applied to Cuisenaire Rods and can be used to efficiently bridge ten. The video shows how to explore the multiples of 7 with Cuisenaire Rods on a 100 square template which can be downloaded on the button below:
