The Hungarian Number Frame
Making numbers on the Hungarian number frame promotes subitising and exposes different structures, allowing children to develop an appreciation of how numbers are composed. It is therefore a useful structure to aid in the development of number sense and may be useful to encourage children to progress from counting to calculating. The composition can also be linked to the fingers.
Objects for making numbers on the frame can be toys or pebbles, shells, pine cones etc.
Mathsbot has a virtual Hungarian Number frame, which can be used for making numbers, exploring patterns and making links to the fingers:
Spot On With Numbers and the Hungarian Number Frame
Spot On With Numbers draws on the strengths of teaching maths using the Hungarian Number frame. The boards can be pre-filled with pegs to encourage calculating, not counting, while offering the flexibility of working with moveable parts.
Spot On With Numbers provides tactile and visual products to promote number sense. The products are designed to incorporate the latest research in maths teaching, around the importance of subitising, part-part whole relationships, multiple representations, making connections, patterning, exposing the structure of the mathematics, spatial awareness and visualisation.
The Spot On With Numbers Early Intervention Programme is a great first step for using the resources. It provides a structured framework for incorporating the resources and a strong basis to guide children in developing early number sense.
The Last Peggie Game:
This is a two player game or it can be played by dividing a group of children into two teams.
1.Play starts with a full frame of 10 objects.
2.Players take it in turn to remove either one or two objects, saying the new total number of pegs left on the board as they do so.
3.Play continues until all objects have been removed.
The player who removes the last object is the winner! This game is included in the Intervention Programme and in the Games Pack.
