Success in Mathematics

Teaching for success in mathematics starts from the learner’s intuitive knowledge. New learning should always be built on firm foundations, with pre-requisite skills firmly embedded and understood. New concepts explored at a concrete level, recorded pictorially, alongside the abstract symbols and language of mathematics, is a highly effective approach for pupils to gain a deeper understanding and higher retention of their learning.

Encouraging application of new skills in varied and real-life scenarios is an important step to ensure that pupils will meaningfully use their new learning in the future. At all levels, communication and metacognitive talk can be used to cement in the learning.

The cement will not set if the experience is dull or anxiety inducing. Positive experiences, enjoyment and sometimes the use of games aid in maximising the learning and ultimately, success in mathematics!
